The Best Advice About Slowness we Have Ever Heard

Carl Honore brings up a very valuable point about the contemporary “road runner” culture. He says:

“The world that we live in now is stuck in fast forward. We became obsessed with speed. We are doing everything faster with cramming more and more into less and less time. When we try to make things better, we try to speed them up. We have now speed-dial, we speed-read, speed -walk, and even speed- date.  Every day feels like raise against the clock.

We are so marinated in the culture of speed. We don’t seem to notice the toll that takes on us in every aspect of our lives, on our health, diet, relationships and work.  We are living the fast life instead of a good life. And sometime it takes a wakeup call to alert us to the fact that we are hurrying through our lives instead of actually living them.  For many people that wakeup call take the form of an illness such as burnout, or eventually the body says: “I can’t take it anymore”.

Why is that?

The world in western cultures got so accelerated because in the west we see time as linear compared to other cultures that see time cyclical. We see time as a scarce resource that is always draining away. Or you use it, or lose it. Time is money.

But now what?

It has been found that by slowing down at the right moments, people find that they do better. They eat better, they make love better, they exercise better, they work better and they live better. It also has been found that we get more pleasure and more health form the food when we cultivate, cook and consume it at a reasonable pace.

Learn how to decelerate at appropriate moments and you become healthier and more efficient. When you switch off, unplug, you get time to recharge and for the brain to slide to the creative mode of thought.

If you are not overloaded, you will feel healthier, happier and your relationships will be deeper, richer and stronger. You will live your life instead of racing through it. Slow down to the rhythm of your body and mind.

Others are realizing it too

In the 21st century, a lot of people are moving away from the kind of “quick fix “mentality found in conventional medicine.  The slowness has its role. Millions of people around the word start understanding the role of slowness and are turning to complementary and alternative forms of medicine that tends to tap into slower, gentler, holistic forms of healing.  Complimentary therapies such as acupuncture, massage and relaxation are increasingly gaining mainstream approval.
